Gallery Iceni Presents Philip Spencer

October 10, 2016

Philip Spencer Photography

Gallery Iceni will be exhibiting the work of renowned local artist Philip Spencer from the 4th October in Swaffham Community Centre. Philip, who is a founding member of the Iceni Partnership and previous community librarian, specialises in digital prints.

Following a lifelong interest in taking photographs, Philip became interested in the potential of computer technology to expand the way images can be developed and used. Some of his work features the landscape, although he is also eager to find less obvious subjects. He usually treats the photographs he takes as raw material from which he will go on and make a picture. “Sometimes I collect a bank of images – crushed cans, hand-drawn arrows – from which I then create grids and montages. At other times I find shapes, textures and colours which I photograph and then develop into more abstract or printerly images, particularly by reducing the number of tones, using computer software.”

His work has previously been showcased as part of the annual Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios event, where his displays of digital prints and collages appeared alongside six other local artists in the formerly known Swaffham EcoTech Centre exhibition. His work has also been exhibited at Fakenham Contemporary Art, Westacre Theatre and at the Swaffham Rotary Exhibition.

“I have always enjoyed taking photographs. For most of my life these have been for personal pleasure and interest. I would never have considered ‘showing’ any of them. Recently however I have begun to explore the opportunities that digital computer software gives us to manipulate (or perhaps develop is a better word) images and so to create something which doesn’t claim to be a photograph, but could be regarded as a print.”

The gallery will be displaying his work for the entire month and there will be the opportunity to purchase his work.
